Emotional Responses After an Abortion
An abortion can be one of the most painful experiences in a person's life. This traumatic event needs to be recognized and healed.
Both before and after an abortion, feelings of fear, anxiety, guilt, panic and helplessness are common. Besides the woman who undergoes the abortion, the father of the unborn child, relatives, close friends and even medical personnel may suffer from some or all of the symptoms.
Often women choose abortion due to pressure from their social environment (partners, parents) or due to personal circumstances (fear of inability to raise a child, financial issues).
Many people are afraid to talk about their abortion experience with others. They are concerned about being condemned.
If you are in this position, we invite you to participate in Project Rachel, a post-abortion healing program offered by certified counselors.
After effects of post-abortion distress include:
- Loss of self-esteem
- Eating and sleeping disorders
- Prolonged grief
- Relationship and Intimacy Issues
- Substance abuse
- Suicidal thoughts
